Teachers or parents/guardians who wish to inquire about psychological services for a student should contact the school’s Resource Teacher or Guidance Counsellor. They will then obtain pre-referral consultation with the school’s psychologist in order to determine what psychological services may be required. Psychological services may involve direct support to the student and/or indirect support through consultation with school staff and parents/guardians. Formal consent from parents/guardians is required before these services are provided to students who are under the age of 18.
Psych services may include:
1. Assessments of students in areas of:
· Cognitive functioning (e.g., in order to identify a specific learning disability, modified programming qualification)
· Behavioural / Emotional functioning (e.g., Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, anxiety, depression, Autism, social skills, adaptive skills)
· Of students (e.g., individual, group) who are having difficulty at school.
3. Classroom-based services:
· Programs for students (e.g., self-esteem, anger management, communication skills).
· Presentations on topics related to academic or social-emotional functioning.
4. Crisis Intervention:
· Member of the school division’s Threat Assessment and Risk Management teams.
· Involvement in the school’s Crisis Response teams.
5. Information & Education:
· In-services for staff or parents/guardians on a wide variety of topics related to students’ academic or social-emotional functioning.
· Providing resource materials to staff and parents/guardians to support them in addressing students’ academic or social-emotional needs.
6. Special needs student services:
· Assistance with the development of Individual Education Plans, Behaviour Intervention Plans, and applications for special supports.
· School-based (e.g., round-table action planning with parents and members of the school-based team).
· Community-based (e.g., coordination of services for students through collaboration with other professionals and support services, such as physicians, psychiatrists, Children's disABILITY Services, Community Mental Health, Child and Family Services).
·This may include fostering an understanding of student profiles/needs, or involvement with school staff in implementing formal school-based prevention program.
